Osteoporosis is a skeletal condition that is characterised by low levels of bone mass which causes our bones to be fragile and brittle. The process by which osteoporosis forms is quite complicated but ill try to make it simple and easy to understand. Two processes occur in our bones to help ensure our bone mass remains at an adequate level. These are called Resorption and Remodelling – Resorption occurs for our older bone and the remodelling phase allows new bone to be laid down. Two bone cells are responsible for these two processes – Osteoclasts assist the resorption phase whilst osteoblasts assist in remodelling. For a person to experience osteoporosis there is an influx of osteoclasts cells and a shortage of osteoblasts thus bone is broken down quicker than it is repaired
